Research and Data Center
Access to data is vital, and every day we amass more and more. The problem, however, arises when this data is misconstrued—either because of implicit bias or overt bigotry. We see this across reports and findings related to Black communities. Black Lives Matter seeks to take ownership of the research process as it relates to issues impacting Black people–not only do we have the cultural intimacy needed to situate the data, but we also know the stakes.
In 2013, what is now known as the Black Lives Matter Foundation began to organize. It started out as a Black-centered political will and movement building project turned chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene when violence is inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. We are honored to join the lineage of organizing work on this land and globally.
