Healing Is Resistance

This May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s a time when many are reminded of the importance of care.

But for Black communities, the need for healing isn’t new—it’s constant, generational, and deeply political.

Black Lives Matter was born from trauma. We are a response to state-sanctioned violence, systemic dehumanization, and the unrelenting grief that Black people carry.

From the very beginning, we knew that the fight for liberation had to include the fight for healing. Not just as individuals—but as a community.

That’s why healing justice is a core pillar of our work.

Inspired by a wealth of ancestral knowledge and tradition, healing justice reminds us that:

  • Our trauma is not imagined.
  • Our pain is political.
  • And our healing is necessary for our freedom.

Here’s the truth: The same systems that harm us also deny us care.

Mental health systems that should offer support often criminalize Black people. The state funds punishment over wellness. And too many of us are left without space, time, or resources to heal.

We’re building something different.

We’re leading healing circles, receiving community-led mental health care, and experiencing spaces where grief and joy can co-exist.

We’re creating space for Black healing, on our own terms. Because who’s got us? We got us.

This work is sacred. It’s necessary. And we need your support. Donate anything you can right now to support healing justice and Black mental health. 🖤

As the world turns its attention to mental health, we ask:

  • What if Black healing was centered—not ignored?
  • What if Black grief was held—not criminalized?
  • What if Black love, Black joy, and Black play were protected, supported, and uplifted?
  • What if Black people had the resources, space, and care we deserve—not just to survive, but to heal?

That’s the world we’re fighting for.
