10 years later, I still believe that #BlackLivesMatter. #BLM10
On July 13th, #BlackLivesMatter will mark their 10 year anniversary!
In the Summer of 2013, the acquittal of George Zimmerman after his murder of 17 year old, unarmed, Trayvon Martin, reignited the global movement for racial justice.
Then and now, Black children, women, men, and gender non-conforming people are widely perceived as threats rather than human beings. Although the Black Lives Matter movement was born from our collective pain, it has catalyzed a generation of organizers, activists, and agents of liberation. The Black Lives Matter movement became the rallying cry in the continued fight to end white supremacy, anti-Black systematic racism, and the brutality inflicted on Black communities at the hands of the State, vigilantes, and local law enforcement.
Take action now and recommit yourself to Black Lives Matter and long-term solidarity with Black liberation by signing your name:
In the last 10 years, the Black Lives Matter movement has grown into the largest social justice movement in U.S. history and inserted abolitionist frameworks into our politics, governments, and relationships. The movement has pushed us to recognize that true public safety is brought about by equitable access to quality education, health care, affordable housing, and economic opportunities, instead of criminalization, incarceration, and policing. Black Lives Matter has made tangible and noticeable impacts on Black people’s lives and challenged people to challenge their own status quo and norms.
But there is still so much work to do.
The wins of the Black Lives Matter movement in the last 10 years are markers of progress, not markers of victory. The movement won’t stop until we live in a world where ALL Black people are liberated. And this demand for liberation isn’t one that just lives in the United States. It is a global call for racial justice and an end to economic injustice, environmental racism, and white supremacy.
