How to Help
TRIGGER WARNING: Body camera images and audio related to the shooting death of a 1-year-old.
On June 14, Police Sgt. Hunter Foster fired into a car outside Walmart, killing 1-year-old Kohen Wiley in his mother’s arms in a Senatobia, Mississippi parking lot. Officers ran after his mother and her friend after they were accused of stealing diapers. Mississippi’s Attorney General determined the shooting was “justified.”
Foster’s body camera shows him beside the car when he fired through the passenger window. Kohen’s mother wasn’t driving. She couldn’t “obey” police orders and she didn’t choose to threaten anyone’s life. She was a bystander.
Afterward, outside the hospital, Foster said, “Didn’t even see a f**kin’ baby in ‘er lap.” He knew there were two women were in the car, and he shot through the passenger window as the car drove away.
Hunter Foster chose to place the protection of merchandise above the life of a bystander that day, and a child lost his life because of that choice.
Kohen would have turned 2 on November 1. His life mattered, and so did the life of every person inside that car that day.
