Formed in late 2014, Black Lives Matter Northwest Indiana–Gary is a Black-led, multiracial, and intergenerational organization deeply rooted in Gary and active in the Northwest Indiana (NWI) region. We work to organize our community against racism and state violence by advocating for demands that address systemic police violence and racism, and by supporting families impacted by police terror and political neglect. We also work to build intersectional coalitions in support of anti-racist struggles in NWI, such as the prevention of an immigration prison from locating to Gary, and the ongoing struggle for justice by residents affected by the Calumet lead crisis caused by profit-driven corporations and politicians. BLM Gary strives to fight racism, educate our communities about the power they have, and build a world where human rights are protected. We believe that Black liberation will lead to liberation for all.
